Merriam-Webster defines it as:
1: the quality or state of being free:
a : the power to do as one pleases
b : freedom from physical restraint
c : freedom from arbitrary or despotic control
d : the positive enjoyment of various social, political, or economic rights and privileges
e : the power of choice
OK, so that's what the dictionary says, but what does it really mean to be free?
As the decades go by, the United States has become less and less free. The process has been gradual - tiny concessions made over time. But like the story of the frog in a pot of cold water that is gradually brought to a boil, we never notice that it's happening until it's too late and we're cooked.
As a nation, I believe we have forgotten what liberty means.
As individuals, I believe we haven't forgotten what liberty means because many of us have never experienced it in the first place.
That's what this blog is about. I believe that in order for our nation to re-discover the liberty that we once knew, we as individuals need to discover liberty, for the first time.
For many of us this is a new concept. We have been conditioned to accept being controlled "for our own good". We have taken many things for granted, but that won't last. The trajectory that we are on is not a good one. Something needs to change.
I believe this change cannot happen overnight. It also won't happen through the political process. There is no "savior" out there who will right this ship. We need to do this ourselves. We need to look at things in a different way. We need an intellectual revolution. Our thoughts and attitudes need to change.
It is an education process. Each of us needs to educate ourselves on the principles of liberty. Only through the process of education will we not only appreciate the true scope of the mess we're in, but we will also know what it will take to get us out of it.
I feel like I've already started down this road and I've made some progress. By no means do I consider myself an expert, but I'm hopeful that my experiences and insights can help anyone who stumbles upon this blog, believes that this country is worth saving, and is willing to put in the effort to learn how it can be done.
It won't be easy, but it's not impossible either.
Let's travel this road together...
